This place is associated widely with the foundation of the city. The Ermita del Carmen, a small Temple built of masonry and tiles on the hill of the same name, near the creek of the savannah (river War) and very next to the place where we heard the Mass for the foundation of the town in the year 1689, opened its doors to the public on July 29, 1745. The current Temple dates from the year 1754. During the wars for Independence, the same was used as a prison for women, in which they were held important patriots santaclareñas.
